Ex-Governor Oni loses bid to sack Fayemi at Supreme Court

Ex-Governor Oni loses bid to sack Fayemi at Supreme Court  IT was a third consecutive loss for ex-Governor Segun Oni in his bid to sack Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi as the Supreme Court yesterday dismissed the appeal he filed. The appeal was against an earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal, which upheld the decision of a Federal High Court, dismissing Oni’s suit challenging Fayemi’s eligibility to contest the last governorship election on June 14, 2018. The Supreme Court, in a unanimous judgment of a five-man panel, held yesterday that the appeal by Oni was statute barred and therefore, incompetent. Justice Amiru Sanusi, in the lead judgment, held that the case, being a pre-election one, was not commenced at the trial court, within the time provided under Section 285 of the Constitution. Justice Sanusi said the case was not commenced in accordance with the provision of Section 285 of the Constitution, requiring all pre-election cases to be initiated within 14 days of

Pep Guardiola rues cruelty of VAR call after Llorente’s disputed goal for Spurs

Image
Pep Guardiola rued the cruelty of the VAR as Spurs ended Manchester City’s hopes of an unprecedented quadruple by eliminating them from the Champions League. The City manager was left to ponder what might have been after Fernando Llorente’s second-half goal was allowed to stand after a review while Raheem Sterling’s injury-time effort for the home side was ruled out. While a buoyant Mauricio Pochettino said Spurs have the belief and class to become champions of Europe for the first time after knocking City out 4-4 on away goals, the substitute Llorente’s ultimately crucial goal went in via an elbow and hip, with the referee, Cuneyt Cakir, awarding the goal and VAR upholding his decision. “I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente’s goal is handball, maybe from the referee’s angle it is not,” Guardiola said. City won the second leg 4-3 but thought they had sealed a place in the semi-finals for only the second time when Sterling seemed to have completed a hat

Senate Presidency: No Problem With Lawan Begging PDP Senators For Votes - APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday said it has no problem with Ahmad Lawan, its choice for the position of Senate President, meeting with relevant stakeholders in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to canvass for votes. Despite the threat by Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of APC, that it will have nothing to do with the PDP because the APC is the majority in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Lawan was reported to have met with some PDP senators and governors, soliciting their support for the number three position. However, speaking in a chat with INDEPENDENT, Lanre Issa-Onilu, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, said the party has no problem with Lawan meeting with relevant stakeholders in the PDP to canvass for votes. According to him, it won’t be a bad thing if Lawan can also get votes from PDP senators on the day of election. He said the party is confident that no matter what happens, the interest of the APC is paramount on La

Tribunal Suspends Kebbi Doctor For Amputating Baby In Womb

A tribunal has suspended a Kebbi doctor for 6 months for amputating a baby in the womb, following his erroneous misdiagnosis and alleged negligence. Dr Jamilu Muhammad who worked at Martha Bamaiyi General Hospital in Zuru, Kebbi, had “erroneously diagnosed” that his patient Fatima Danjuma’s baby had died in the womb and needed to be evacuated in 2017. However the tribunal of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria who gathered that the foetus was found to be alive while the surgery was already on and a prolapsed upper limb already amputated, ruled on the petition for “unethical behaviour” which was filed with the council in May 2017. The tribunal chairman Abba Hassan who announced that the Kebbi doctor has been suspended for amputating a baby in the womb, ruled that Muhammad conducted himself “infamously in a professional respect contrary” to the council’s code of medical ethics. Muhammad who was suspended pending the outcome of his trial, however pleaded guilty and asked for len

Sign minimum wage bill now - Labour tells Buhar

Organised labour under the aegis of Trade Union Side (TUS) of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the N30,000 National Minimum Wage Bill. This was coming on the heels of Senate’s approval of the bill last month. In a statement, the union’s chairman, Abdrafiu Adeniji, and secretary, Alade Lawal, stressed that the current N18,000 minimum wage had become very inadequate, as workers were finding it extremely difficult to cope with daily challenges thrown up by skyrocketing prices of goods and services. The group noted that Buhari’s quick signing of the wage bill into law would bring smile to the faces of workers. In another vein, the National Pension Commission (Pencom) has explained that it launched the Micro Pension Plan to pull Nigerians out of poverty and reduce financial stress among families of those in the informal sector. Head, Corporate Communications of Pencom, Peter Aghahowa, told reporters at the o

Poisoning Of OAU Dam, Act Of Genocide – Obafemi Awolowo University Management

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has described the poisoning of its dam by suspected hoodlums as an act of genocide against members of the institution. Recalls that some aggrieved indigenes of Ile-Ife, who claimed ownership of some portions of the university land, had on April 3 invaded the university and allegedly poisoned the institution’s dam with a chemical. Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, the university’s Public Relation Officer, who conducted journalists round the disputed land and the dam within the school’s premises, on Wednesday, said the poisoning of the dam was genocidal. Olanrewaju said the chemical used in poisoning the dam, which was the only source of water for the university, killed all the aquatic animals in it. He, however, said that the dam had been treated and was now safe to drink. “The act is condemnable and wicked. “How can some group of people poison the only source of the dam where the over 36,000-strong university population was

2nd Term: Governor Yahaya Bello Relocates To Abuja

Image
By Temidayo Akinsuy Lagos – With few months to the conduct of the governorship election in Kogi State, the state governor, Yahaya Bello, who is seeking reelection, has practically abandoned governance and has temporarily relocated to Abuja to lobby President Muhammadu Buhari, first lady Aisha Buhari and other leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Bello, who was sworn in as the fourth civilian governor of Kogi State on January 27, 2016, was picked by the leadership of the APC to replace the late Abubakar Audu, the original party’s candidate who died before the governorship election held on November 21, 2015 was concluded. Audu was leading the candidate of the PDP, former Gov. Idris Wada, before the election was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Many had thought the late Audu’s running mate, James Faleke, a serving member of the House of Representatives, would replace him, but the party’s leadership led by its form

Buba Galadima: We Have Proof Atiku Won The Presidential Election

Buba Galadima is one of the spokesmen of the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign in the general election. Though he leads the Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC) as its national chairman, he is a resolute member of the Atiku campaign on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In this interview aired on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Galadima insists that the PDP won the February 23 presidential election and that the court process would be used to prove the assertion. Group Politics Editor, TAIWO ADISA who monitored the interview, brings excerpts: There were reports that you were arrested but the security agents denied that they had no reason to arrest you and then later on, we heard that you had written to your family members to say you were in a safe place. Were you actually arrested or just a gimmick? It was not a gimmick. It was a reality and I just elected not to talk about it. So, were you arrested? I have elected not to speak about it. You do

IGBO'S has failed politically - Rochas Okorocha

Image
The outgoing Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, Monday gave what he described as two reasons the Igbo people failed woefully in Nigeria politics. According to Okorocha, while briefing newsmen at the government House in Owerri, said that one of the reasons was that the Igbo people failed to accept the light coming to them. He also said that the Igbo also did not appreciate the person who came to assist them. Okorocha went on to say that he was confident that his certificate of return as Senator-elect for Imo West, would be given to him attributing what has been delaying his certificate of return, to game of politics. The governor also said he gave banks in Nigeria, seven days ultimatum to tell the world whether he has borrowed any money from them. He also challenged civil servants in the state, to open up whether his government was owing them. On the Imo West senatorial election, he said: “Elections have come and gone and we are dealing with the outcome. For the Imo West

9th National Assembly: Would History Repeat Itself?

9th National Assembly: Would History Repeat Itself? Source: THE SUN By Michael Bush Last Friday, I decided to do something I hadn’t done in a long while. I went into the main bowl of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja to nose around for a different kind of news. Since that was the day the authorities were rounding off the weeklong induction of the first batch of newly-elected senators and representatives, I reckoned there would be so much to hear or see. And, there was! The hotel which never lacks guests lived up to expectation that fateful weekend. The lobby though was unusually jampacked. With everyone dressed to kill, it was absolutely impossible to differentiate between those who had come to be inducted and those whose sole aim was to abduct attention or job or money, or all. Any novice reporter would have fallen mugu. Not me, because where I come from (an Akwa Ibom Local Government Area called Uruan), anytime we are in a quandary we resort to our trademark third eye -rather than th

3 things ole Gunner is doing wrong at Manchester United

Manchester United have struggled in recent games under their new permanent manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. What can he do to turn things around? When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as caretaker manager back in December, Manchester United were in a dire situation. Then-manager Jose Mourinho was sackedafter losing 3-1 to rivals Liverpool, leaving his side in 6th place in the Premier League table with top four seemingly out of reach. No one saw it coming, then, when his replacement was able to turn things round in spectacular fashion, winning his first eight games in charge and bringing United within touching distance of 3rd place. However, United’s form took a nosedive after their historic turnaround against Paris Saint-Germain, losing three out of their next four games, and now top four once again seems like a difficult prospect for the Red Devils. So, what is going wrong for Solskjaer at United, you ask? Well, here are three things he needs to change in his managerial approach

He said; ''Truth be told, the race that first discovered prosperity and wealth and they really nurtured it are the Igbo race. The Igbos first discovered it through their ancestral background, the linage of Obatala. They discovered the lineage of prosperity and wealth in terms of the divinity world and that is the reason why today, the Igbo race have very good expertise when it comes to commerce. They are very distinct. There is no place you would go in the world that you would not find an Igbo man. And the

How To Fix Chrome Not Working On Windows 10

How To Fix Chrome Not Working On Windows 10 Chrome, like many others apps on Windows 10, makes some changes to the Windows registry when you install it. These changes are essential for Chrome to run. The browser has a neat reset feature that can reset everything back to their default value should anything break. That said, the reset doesn’t appear to fix everything. For some Windows 10 users Chrome not working has to do with a registry problem. If you’re constantly getting ERR_TIMED_OUT errors in Chrome even though other browsers work fine, here’s what you need to do. Chrome not working Before you apply this particular fix, you need to check if it will work for you. Open Task manager and go to the Services tab. Sort the service by name i.e., alphabetical order and look for the CryptSvc service. Right-click it and select ‘Restart’ from the context menu. After that, check if Chrome is working or not. If it is, then this fix is going to fix Chrome long term. Open the Windows regi

EKITI STATE: GOV. FAYEMI UNDER FIRE OVER COMMISSIONERS NOMINATION

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has portrayed the list of commissioners which was submitted to the Ekiti State House of Assembly by Governor Kayode Fayemi as most disappointing. This was contained in a press statement signed and made available today by MURIC Founder and Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola. It should be recall that, Governor Fayemi sent his list of commissioners to the state assembly on Tuesday. The list contained fourteen (14) names. The governor also added another five (5) names for the nomination of the chairman and members of the Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission (EKSLGSC). MURIC’s statemen goes thus; "This list is heavily lopsided. Fayemi is ill-advised. He has grossly shortchanged Muslims. "How can he give us only one commissioner out of fourteen? What parameter did he use? This is most disappointing. Fayemi has blindfolded Muslims in Ekiti state. Muslims are not part of his government. "Ekiti State executive is not tr

Nigeria Muslim Supreme Councils React To CAN Letter To NASS

ON CAN’S LETTER TO THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY Given the trajectory of the recent activities of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), like other informed groups and people in Nigeria, cannot but wonder whether CAN still remains a religious body or a political party in a religious garb. The Council is persuaded to believe the latter because of the Association’s posture as the counterfoil for and opposition to everything Islam and Muslims in this country. We cannot also but wonder whether Islamophobia has indeed not replaced the more important responsibility of giving direction to millions of our compatriots who are law-abiding citizens of the Christian faith. It is really benumbing that CAN appears to be giving credence and relevance to the rhetorical question asked centuries ago: “if gold rust, what should iron do?” Specifically, the statement issued by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji (Special Assistant Media and Communication to C

Odemwingie was the subject of a peculiar story on Deadline Day in January 2013. Believing he was moving to QPR from West Brom, the striker drove to Loftus Road, only to be refused entry to the stadium after both clubs said that no fee had been agreed. On his retirement, Odemwingie was quoted as saying by Skysports, “It’s an emotional day, so many memories go through your head. “I didn’t know how to do it or where to do it, but I think this is the right place to do it. “Wembley is a place with a lot of history in football.” Odemwingie, whose last professional appearances came for Indonesian side Madura United in 2017, said he intends to embark on a coachi

Image
Algerians have flooded the streets to celebrate after their president Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned after weeks of massive streets protests. 82-year-old Bouteflika, has been in power for 20-year and had suffered a stroke 6-year ago. After that, he was rarely been seen in public. Yet, he expressed his intention to seek a fifth term. But the Algerian army called for the Algeria President to be declared incapable of carrying out his duties. On state TV, he made a rare appearance to relinquish power hours after military chief Lt. Gen Ahmed Gaed Salah had called on him to leave office immediately. BBC reports says that car horns could be heard in the streets of the capital, Algiers, as hundreds celebrated the announcement. Excited citizens waved Algeria’s national flags and sang as they celebrated. “God willing, we will have a 100% democratic transition, this is very important. We need to remove the whole previous regime and that is the hardest thing,” a man, Selmaoui Seddik, told R
