The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has taken punitive measures against senior military officers under whose watch a key brigade fellto Boko Haram terrorists last week, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. The withdrawal of BA Akinroluyo and CG Musa, major-generals, and IA Ajose, a colonel, from the battlefront comes less than a week after the brigade was attacked in Gubio, Borno State, on August 10. At least four soldiers were killed and a large quantity of weapons carted away when the insurgents entered the brigade at about 6:00 p.m. The attack also left large swathes of territory without military control across Borno, the heartland of the 10-year insurgency. President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, signed the Nigerian Correctional Service Bill into law. The bill, among other things, changes the name of the Nigerian Prisons Service to Nigerian Correctional Service. Mr Buhari had previously declined to sign the bill back in April after lawmakers first passed and sent it to him. He declined on the grounds that the bill violates Sections 81 and 84 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees the independence of the judiciary. Following the rejection, the lawmakers amended the bill in May and resent it to the president. Here are 10 things you need to know about the new law. 1. A Kogi governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress, Mohammed Audu, on Thursday said the party could lose the state to the Peoples Democratic Party if the APC governorship primary scheduled for August 29 is not free, fair, credible and transparent. He stated that only free, fair and credible primary would save the Kogi State chapter of the APC from being defeated in the November 16 governorship election in the state. He spoke at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja after obtaining his governorship nomination and expression of interest forms. No fewer than 13,000 Almajiri children have been enrolled in an Almajiri school located in the Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, while 8, 000 out-of- school children have also been reorganised and admitted to conventional schools in the area. The initiator of the Almajiri school, the Emir of Keffi, Dr. Shehu Yamusa III, disclosed this on Thursday when the Progressive Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists paid him a visit in Keffi. The monarch said the Keffi Emirate Council had decided to embark on a head count of Almajiri children and out-of-school children in the area as a measure aimed at discouraging more parents from abandoning their children on the streets. The Emir said he had already set up a committee to tackle the issue and taken an inventory of all Islamic schools in the local government area, as well as obtained the the total number of Almajiris in Keffi aimed at getting actual figures of out-of- school -children and Almajiris in the LGA.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have questioned the immediate past Imo State governor, now a lawmaker, Senator Rochas Okorocha. It was gathered that Okorocha who is being investigated by the commission for money laundering, was questioned last Friday. It was learnt that the ex-governor had been asked to come back on Monday, August 19, for further questioning and to provide certain documents in respect of the allegations against him. A source said, “We grilled him on various suspicious transactions carried out by his administration particularly towards the end of his tenure. He also responded to allegations of money laundering and the alleged acquisition of property with state funds. He has been directed to return on Monday.” The commission had earlier traced some property, including residential estates, schools and shopping malls to the senator, some of which were sealed. A bridegroom named as David Jiet Chawul, died on Monday evening, two days after his wedding on Saturday 10th, Aug, 2019. David Jiet committed suicide when his newly wedded wife confessed that she was pregnant for another man. Mr. David Jiet from Agaar community of Rumbek, a biological brother of Gen. It was gathered that the suspect was using a white handkerchief to pack the urine-soaked sand not knowing that someone was watching him. However, as he made to leave, an alarm was raised and he was apprehended. Upon searching him, more handkerchiefs were found with him and a charm was discovered tied around his waist. EFCC traces cash to Kwara ex-first lady...  The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced some of the looted N2 billion for Small and Medium Enterprise Development (SMED) in Kwara State to the account of a former First Lady in the state.
